Synonyms: Lampsilis ventricosa, Lampsilis ovata form ventricosa
Distribution: Distributed throughout the Mississippi River drainage from Minnesota and Wisconsin to eastern New York, the Missouri River system as far west as Kansas, and south to Arkansas and Oklahoma. Also occurs in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River drainage and the Hudson Bay drainage. Widespread in eastern both the Arkansas and Red River systems in eastern Oklahoma.
Life History and Ecology: Frequently occurs in coarse gravel and sand in moderate current and can thrive is some reservoirs. Long-term brooder that uses a mantle lure to attract and infect fish hosts including smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, sauger, and yellow perch. Periodic life history strategy. Widespread in eastern Oklahoma streams and rivers, but usually at low abundance. Sexually dimorphic with shells of females being more inflated and truncated posteriorly.
