Distribution: This species is widespread throughout Texas, but also occurs in the lower Mississippi River drainage as far north as southern Illinois and the lower Ohio River. In Oklahoma, it is believed to be restricted to the Little River system and the Red River below Lake Texoma.
Life History and Ecology: Typically occurs in shallow areas of lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, as well as small to large rivers, where it inhabits mud, sand, or fine gravel. Long-term brooder that attracts reported sunfish hosts with a mantle lure. Opportunistic life history strategy.
